Filmmaker Dale Johnson Wins Burtie Award

Veteran travel film shooter Dale Johnson won the first Burtie Award for his showcase at the Travel Adventure Cinema Society’s annual Film Festival and convention in Albuquerque in September.

The Burtie, named in honor of the pioneering travel film producer, Burton Holmes, was presented to Johnson by Travel Adventure Cinema.

Johnson’s entry—Beneath the Jungle and Beyond–Mesoamerica—was selected by Society members from Festival entries showcased at the city’s Radisson Hotel.

Johnson directed and filmed the television series The Lone Star Sportsman and worked for five years producing documentaries and public relations films for the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

His wife, Sandy Mortimer, is also a travel filmmaker. Their Kentucky-based production firm, Trailwood Films, has produced many prize-winning documentaries over the years.

Presenters Chairman Steve Smith announced that Gray Warriner, Seattle cinematographer, won the Hall of Fame Award.

Smith also announced that the filmmaking team of Sid and Mary Lee Nolan of Corvallis, Oregon, were the winners of the organization’s Rising Star award.

Alan Jones of Portland was named the Presenter of the Year by the Producers group.

Hal McClure, filmmaker and editor of Travel Adventure Cinema, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society. President Mike Kinsel presented the award.

The Society is comprised of cinematographers, presenters and agents.
