Adventuring filmmakers, bookers and agents will gather in the place Carl Sandburg called the City of the Big Shoulders and where Burton Holmes once called home.
It’s Chicago, of course, where for two days, September 19-20, the Travel Adventure Cinema Society will hold its annual film showcase and convention. The last time the field met in Chicago was in 1994.
This time the meeting place of choice is the European-style boutique Seneca hotel, just two blocks from the Museum of Contemporary Art where Saturday’s opening all-day film session takes place, said TRACS Executive Secretary Kathie Veach. Sunday’s events are at the Seneca.
Stan Walsh, film artists chairman, said once again an award in honor of Holmes—the Burtie—will be given to the outstanding showcase film. Dale Johnson won the first Burtie last year in Albuquerque.
The museum itself ties into our field, Stan pointed out, because it is one of the nation’s largest showcases devoted to “the art of our time”—since 1945. And that art, besides painting and sculpture, includes photography, video and film.” He added:
“It’s interesting to note that the venerable museum has ties to our own presentation niche. In 1893, the white-tie-and-tails-clad Holmes presented a slide show to members. And they loved it, I’m sure. I’m also sure he would be pleased to know we are honoring him with the Burtie.”
Film showcase rules remain the same as last year, Walsh said. There will be no showcase fees for TRACS filmmakers or newcomers to the field. However, all newcomers must be a member of the society and have their films vetted by a TRACS film artist. More details on the film festival will be announced later.
The Seneca, at 200 E. Chestnut, is across the street from Water Tower Place and just a short walk from other big names in shopping such as Neiman-Marcus and Bloomingdales.
The hotel is home to the legendary restaurant, the Saloon Steakhouse, besides its Chestnut Street Café and its 200 East relaxed supper club. The Seneca also boasts a state-of-the-art fitness center and valet parking.
Rates: Single rooms are $139 a night, doubles $139, triples $159, quads $179. There’s a small kitchen in almost all rooms, Kathie reported. Reservations: 800-800-6261.
