John Holod
Two Filmmakers Move Into HD Realm
Dale Johnson and John Holod are joining Robin Williams in Travel Adventure Cinema’s realm of High Definition. Robin and Rosetta’s MAYDAY Tugs of War, was the first to be shot in the new format.
Dale Johnson will be shooting Texas Trails and Tales in High Def this year to be ready for release in the Fall of 2010. Dale is using his Canon XL-H1.
“I’ll cover the whole state from Pan Handle to Gulf Coast and all in between… the icons as well as the surprising and unknown features,” reports Dale.
“There are now a lot of bumper stickers like this: I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could. Probably over half the population of the state fits into the category of non-native resident. I was born there myself, although I can’t say that it has conferred any special status.” Release is set for September 2010.
John Holod will also be using a Canon XL-H1 this summer to film his The Great Rocky Mountain RV Adventure. “I’m using the Canon for its interchangeable lenses for wildlife close-ups,” said John. “Love those bears.” Release is set for January 2010.
Reidelbergers in Mexico
Fran and Brooke Reidelberger will be filming in Mexico with its Copper Canyons, silver cities, golden beaches and gray whales. Colorful Mexico (working title) is due for release in Fall 2010.
“After 32 years, 18 films, and 8 years of Bush, we still get excited about a new film project,” said Fran, adding:
“Obviously, this new show will be considerably different from our earlier Mexico effort , which never got out of the Central Highlands. We’re really excited about the Copper Canyon segment. There has been a lot of work done on the rail line and the facilities, making it not only more enjoyable for visitors, but also making it more ‘user friendly’ for photographers.
”
The new film will also feature Baja and the migrating Gray Whales and the scientific work underway with these giant mammals.
Fran will be using his twin Sony 2000 digital cameras and edit on a Casablanca Prestige.
Gonsers to Film Barbados
Filmmakers Steve and Yvonne Gonser will wing over to Barbados in May to shoot their new travel film, Barbados: Island in the Sun, which will be ready for release this Fall.
After the Carribean show, these busy Hoosiers plan to start filming their next project, Majestic Montana, in time for either the 2010-11 season or the next. “We haven’t decided yet whether we will include chapters with all four seasons in the program,” messaged Steve.
The Monty Browns Shooting in Wales
Husband-wife Film Artists Monty and Marsha Brown leave for Wales this summer to shoot Wales Land of Song. It’s set for release next January.
The Browns are shooting with two Sony D-900s and editing on Final Cut Pro 5.0.4. To record the Welsh music scene they will be using high-end audio gear.
As for future shoots: “A longer-range plan is filming The Travels of Father Serra, which will take us to Majorca in 2010,” Monty told us.
“We have already filmed The Missions of Father Serra, a 37-minute film featuring the original nine California missions established by Junipero Serra in the 18th Century. Majorca, where Serra was born, should complete the story.” That film has a likely release date of January 2011.
Sandy Mortimer Holland Bound
Filmmaker Sandy Mortimer will be in Holland this summer “looking for good stories” as she shoots her latest travel film, The Netherlands: Stories of the Dutch.
Sandy is shooting with a Sony 2000 and editing in Final Cut Pro. She plans to have the show ready for the 2010-11 season.
Busy Denns in Portugual, Hungary, Black Sea
Clint and Sue Denn will be in Europe this spring putting the final touches to their upcoming Portugal & Cruising the Douro Valley. It’s set for a February 2010 release.
Their next stop is Hungary to begin filming on Budapest to Istanbul and the Historic Black Sea. “It is quite a title, but then it is quite a subject to cover,” says Sue. ”We will be about five weeks on the Black Sea trip. The film is set for October 2010 release.”
TAC’s cruising adventurers have Vietnam & Cruising the Mekong on the horizon for their next film.
They use a Sony PD170 and edit on a Casablanca Prestige.

I think it’s great that some travel film producers are starting to shoot in HD. However, what is the plan, exactly, for showing these creations to live audiences. True HD has 1080 vertical lines (or vertical pixels) but do they make high intensity projector with long throw lenses that put out at 1080? Also, even if the resolution is reduced for projection purposes (which is probably OK) to what extent do local sponsors need to go out and obtain new screens? I’m concerned that just reducing the vertical dimension (by going “letterbox” on existing screen) will seem more like taking something away from local audience that like giving them more.
