Tape or Tapeless ?

We’re being swept toward a tapeless production and work flow, even as tape is being swept out the door, online Retin-A without a prescription, Ordering Retin-A online, it seems.   Virtually every prosumer and even professional cameras are now capturing to SD or compact flash cards.

At first both Panasonic and Sony designed cameras to use their own proprietary cards, generic Retin-A, Retin-A schedule, P2 cards for Panasonic and SxS cards for Sony.  Canon decided to design their cameras to use less expensive CF cards (compact flash), and now both Panasonic and Sony can use CF media as well.  They can be as large as 64 gigs in capacity, Retin-A duration, Buy no prescription Retin-A online, but a 32 gig card at around $120 seems to be the sweet spot for the most capacity for the best cost.

Some cameras allow two cards to be inserted so that when one is full of recorded data it can be removed and the data downloaded into a computer while the camera continues to record to the other card remaining in the camera.  When that second card if full of data, the first one can be inserted into the camera again, my Retin-A experience, Retin-A recreational, and recording as long as the batteries in the camera hold out.

The smallest cards of 2 gig may only hold 20 minutes of recording time.  (To us old film guys, that seems like a luxury...a 100-foot roll of 16mm film was three minutes.  Even Hollywood had to shoot with 1000 foot rolls of 35mm film which gave them 11 minutes recording time in that format.)

Some of the new video cameras allow you to capture to a hard drive for 7 1/2 hours (!) before needing to reset, order Retin-A no prescription, Retin-A pharmacy, offload, erase, what is Retin-A, Buy Retin-A online no prescription, or whatever is necessary to keep on shooting.

Tape is a great deal less costly.  Some writers reason that tapes are costly because they can only be used once.  Not strictly true...they can be used over and over, although not a recommended practice, Retin-A dangers, Buying Retin-A online over the counter, and I’ve never heard of anyone doing so.  Actually they are an economical means of archival storage with the cost now getting down near $2 for a one hour tape.

On one forum list I monitor, video producers have often mentioned that they submit finished programs to local and cable channels as digital data.  But apparently the major networks are still running with tape.

Robert Longwell at ABC TV has this to say:

Today, Retin-A treatment, Buy Retin-A from canada, we get most of our programming on both D5 and HDCAM SR, although we also get ProRes HQ files, generic Retin-A. After Retin-A, Both methods have their pros and cons, but tapes still seem to work better, where can i buy cheapest Retin-A online. There are only a few ways to make a bad tape, but a million ways to make a bad file, Retin-A For Sale. Where can i find Retin-A online, There are so many options for a file, so many places for something to go wrong, online buying Retin-A. Order Retin-A no prescription, You can wind up with eight tracks of mono vs. four tracks of stereo, buy no prescription Retin-A online, Retin-A from mexico, mixed up apertures between 1920x1080 and 1888x1062, all kinds of messed up metadata—and it's hard to fix those mistakes once they're there in the file, Retin-A wiki. Purchase Retin-A for sale, With tape, there's signal on the tape, get Retin-A, Comprar en línea Retin-A, comprar Retin-A baratos, or there's NOT signal on the tape. It just works, buy Retin-A online cod, Buy cheap Retin-A no rx, and it seems to generally be more accurate.

Don't get me wrong —I want to be tapeless as much as anybody. It's the Holy Grail, Retin-A pics, Australia, uk, us, usa, but I think we're also getting slightly ahead of ourselves. Until these files feel like I'm moving around a really small MP3 file, buy Retin-A from mexico, Purchase Retin-A, and it doesn't have any impact based on the speed of the network, and file size has no bearing because we're working in petabytes of storage, cheap Retin-A, Canada, mexico, india, it feels a little premature for the moment to rely on it solely.

A third way to capture video data with a camcorder is onto a DVD disc. This shares with tape the negative that moving mechanical parts are required to record video.  DVD discs then have to be transferred into one's computer or NLE for editing, taking Retin-A, the same as when using tape.  Discs are a good permanent storage, but may now be more expensive than tape, depending on the codec the camera uses and the size of digital files it produces.  The codec on a DVD disc is also of inferior quality for editing, and consequently this format has been mainly for  inexpensive ‘family’ camcorders.

Another advantage of using a memory card is that some cameras constantly record a three-second cache.  So when the camera is started, the three seconds before that has already been captured and saved.  This would be a real boon to anyone trying to film wildlife, and was one reason not to use tape when it began to replace film.  A film camera could be started instantly, but the tape cameras needed a few seconds to get up to speed, thus losing some of the key action the cameraman was hoping to get.  Cameras such as the Canon FX300 has this prestart buffer built in and would probably appeal to sports photographers as well as nature cameramen.

Once video data has been captured it must be ingested into your computer or NLE.  This had to be done in real time from tape.  But from a SSD or flash card it can happen by simply dragging the file onto your computer hard some cases.  The speed of the card, the format of captured data, and the editing system used can combine to make this a tricky maneuver.

In any case, you’ll need to use a reader for the card.  In some cases, the camera can be used to transfer data to your computer hard drive, or you can use a card reader, like the universal reader below for around $25.

You will need a reader if your camera can accept two cards, and record to one while you download the other.

Permanent storage becomes a final concern.  I still like the idea of a tape with the original imagery safely filed away.  There is some concern, however, about the degradation of the magnetic signal on tape over a period of time.  I’ve read of producers having a problem with this phenomenon, but have not experienced the problem myself.  (I have some magnetic audio tapes recorded 50 years ago that still seem to have a usable signal on them.  MiniDV tapes recorded 10 years ago seem to have functionally valid signal preserved.  Beta SP tapes from 15 or 20 years back exhibit some dropouts.)

Media data transferred from flash cards to a hard drive seems to be a safe way to save video images (and audio), but even hard drives may experience a deterioration of the magnetic signal strength I read.  They need to be refreshed, or spun up, from time to time to ensure their integrity.  The original card itself probably would be an excellent storage medium, but far too expensive at this point for archiving data.  The sweet spot for archival storage now seems to be mechanical hard drives because the price per gigabyte has become quite economical.  And, of course, it’s much quicker to retrieve needed data from a hard drive than from a tape.  But, eventually it seems, all digital data is headed for solid state acquisition and archiving...with no movable parts.
