Don't get me wrong —I want to be tapeless as much as anybody. A third way to capture video data with a camcorder is onto a DVD disc. This shares with tape the negative that moving mechanical parts are required to record video. Discs are a good permanent storage, but may now be more expensive than tape, depending on the codec the camera uses and the size of digital files it produces. The codec on a DVD disc is also of inferior quality for editing, and consequently this format has been mainly for inexpensive ‘family’ camcorders.

Another advantage of using a memory card is that some cameras constantly record a three-second cache. So when the camera is started, the three seconds before that has already been captured and saved. This would be a real boon to anyone trying to film wildlife, and was one reason not to use tape when it began to replace film. A film camera could be started instantly, but the tape cameras needed a few seconds to get up to speed, thus losing some of the key action the cameraman was hoping to get. Cameras such as the Canon FX300 has this prestart buffer built in and would probably appeal to sports photographers as well as nature cameramen.

Once video data has been captured it must be ingested into your computer or NLE. This had to be done in real time from tape. But from a SSD or flash card it can happen by simply dragging the file onto your computer hard drive...in some cases. The speed of the card, the format of captured data, and the editing system used can combine to make this a tricky maneuver.

In any case, you’ll need to use a reader for the card. In some cases, the camera can be used to transfer data to your computer hard drive, or you can use a card reader, like the universal reader below for around $25.

You will need a reader if your camera can accept two cards, and record to one while you download the other.

Permanent storage becomes a final concern. I still like the idea of a tape with the original imagery safely filed away. There is some concern, however, about the degradation of the magnetic signal on tape over a period of time. I’ve read of producers having a problem with this phenomenon, but have not experienced the problem myself. (I have some magnetic audio tapes recorded 50 years ago that still seem to have a usable signal on them. MiniDV tapes recorded 10 years ago seem to have functionally valid signal preserved. Beta SP tapes from 15 or 20 years back exhibit some dropouts.)

Media data transferred from flash cards to a hard drive seems to be a safe way to save video images (and audio), but even hard drives may experience a deterioration of the magnetic signal strength I read. They need to be refreshed, or spun up, from time to time to ensure their integrity. The original card itself probably would be an excellent storage medium, but far too expensive at this point for archiving data. The sweet spot for archival storage now seems to be mechanical hard drives because the price per gigabyte has become quite economical. And, of course, it’s much quicker to retrieve needed data from a hard drive than from a tape. But, eventually it seems, all digital data is headed for solid state acquisition and archiving...with no movable parts.

Said Frank: “Terry asked me how to dispose of all their old 16mm. equipment. Unfortunately, I'll have to give her the bad news about the fate of that format.”

LAS VEGAS—The industry’s highly touted 3D camera systems scored the biggest attraction at this year’s NAB session.

Panasonic brought out their new all-in-one camera. Only six prototype units were on display. The actual working models will go on sale in November. Lormetazepam dangers, This unit seemed to be the only one that might interest travel film shooters—at present anyway.

Panasonic says the quality of the camera is 4K, which would be equal to 70 mm film. Scenes of unequaled color and clarity would look tremendous on our auditorium screens.

The Sony camera takes a single image and separates it into right and left images that are then recorded by individual image sensors.
